Why Do We Celebrate 4/20?

The origins of 4/20 are shrouded in mystery, with various myths and theories circulating online. Despite the plethora of stories, three main possibilities have gained the most traction.

  1. Police Code Myth: One popular theory suggests that 420 was a code used by police officers to indicate a potential marijuana possession. However, there is little evidence to support this claim.

  2. Bob Dylan’s Song: Another theory points to Bob Dylan’s song "Rainy Day Women No. 12 & 35." The lyrics famously declare "everybody must get stoned," and many have noted that 420 is the product of 12 multiplied by 35. While this connection is intriguing, it is more likely a coincidence than the true origin of 4/20.

  3. The Waldos: The most widely accepted origin story involves a group of California high school students known as "the Waldos." In the early 1970s, these students would meet every day at 4:20 PM after school to smoke a joint and search for a rumored hidden cannabis crop. Although they never found the crop, they coined the term "420" to refer to their meeting time. This term gained prominence through documents saved by the group and was eventually recognized by the Oxford English Dictionary.

From Local Lore to Pop Culture Phenomenon

The term "420" was further popularized by the Grateful Dead’s bassist, Phil Lesh, who had a close relationship with the brother of one of the original Waldos. As a result, "420" began to be used at Grateful Dead concerts to signal a time for fans to come together and smoke cannabis. This practice spread rapidly, embedding the term into cannabis culture and pop culture alike as a symbol of celebration and cannabis camaraderie.
